Reclaiming Personal Power: Choosing Choice and Agency

One of the most profound losses in trauma is a sense of personal agency. When traumatic things happened to you, you learned that you couldn't control what happened to you. That your choices don't matter. That you're powerless.

This belief often persists even after the trauma has ended. You might find yourself automatically deferring to others' choices, assuming you have no say, or feeling helpless even in situations where you actually do have options.

Reclaiming personal power isn't about controlling everything. It's about recognizing where you do have choice and gradually expanding from there.

Where Does Agency Actually Live?

You can't control what happened. You can't control others' choices. You can't control much of the external world.

But you can control: - How you respond to what happens - What you believe about yourself - What values guide your life - How you treat yourself - What boundaries you set - What support you seek - What meaning you make from your experiences

Starting with these points of control—your own responses, beliefs, and choices—you reclaim agency.

The Practice of Choosing

This might sound simple, but if you're trauma-informed, choosing feels risky. Choosing means having an opinion. Having an opinion means being visible. Being visible means potentially being wrong, criticized, or harmed.

So you've learned not to choose. You defer, accommodate, go along.

Reclaiming agency means practicing choice in small ways: - What do you actually want for dinner? - What do you want to do this afternoon? - What boundary do you want to set? - What do you believe?

These seem trivial, but they're not. Each time you make a choice and experience that it's okay—that you can have preferences and act on them—your nervous system learns something new.

The Expansion of Agency

As you practice small choices, you build confidence and capacity for bigger ones: - Staying in a relationship because you choose it, not because you feel trapped - Making a career move because it aligns with your values - Speaking up about something that matters - Walking away from something that's not serving you

Each choice expands your sense of what's possible.

When You Feel Powerless

Sometimes situations are genuinely constrained. You might be in a circumstance where your actual choices are limited. In these moments, agency lives in how you relate to your constraints.

You can't choose your external situation, but you can choose your internal response. You can choose to notice what small choices you do have. You can choose to plan for a future when you have more options.

This isn't about toxic positivity or suggesting that all situations are the same. Some situations are genuinely limiting. But even in these situations, some agency usually exists.

Your Life, Your Choices

As you heal, one of the most powerful realizations is: "This is my life. I get to choose." Not perfectly. Not without consequences. But genuinely—your life is yours to influence.

That's personal power. And you're reclaiming it.
