Living Your Values: Finding Integrity After Trauma

Many trauma survivors lose touch with their values. You're focused on survival—managing flashbacks, regulating your nervous system, coping with symptoms. Values feel like a luxury.

But reconnecting with your values is actually central to healing. It gives you direction, meaning, and a reason to keep going.

What Are Values, Really?

Values are the things that matter most to you. They're not goals (though they inform your goals). They're the principles and qualities you want your life to reflect.

Common values include: authenticity, compassion, growth, connection, creativity, justice, family, independence, learning, peace.

Your values are personal. What matters deeply to your neighbor might not matter to you, and that's okay.

How Trauma Disconnects You From Values

When you're in survival mode, values can feel irrelevant. A person focused on managing panic attacks might not have energy for their value of creativity. Someone navigating an unstable home situation might not be able to prioritize their value of peace.

Over time, if you're disconnected from your values for long enough, you might forget what they were. You might start living according to others' values or just getting through each day.

Reconnecting With Your Values

Start by reflecting: What matters to you? What do you want to stand for? If you had all the resources and support you needed, how would you want to live?

Your answers might surprise you. You might reconnect with values you thought you'd lost.

Then, ask: Are my current choices aligned with these values? This isn't about perfection or judgment. It's about noticing where there's alignment and where there's disconnect.

Often, you'll find small ways to move toward your values: - If you value connection but isolation is your default, one video call might align you - If you value creativity but you've abandoned it, one hour creating something is alignment - If you value authenticity but you're performing, one moment of honesty is alignment

The Power of Value-Aligned Choices

When you make choices aligned with your values, even small ones, something shifts. Your nervous system registers: "This matters. I matter. My life is reflecting what's important to me."

This builds meaning and agency. Your life isn't just something happening to you—it's something you're actively creating.

Values as Healing

Values also provide direction for your healing. If you value connection, pursuing relational healing makes sense. If you value peace, learning regulation skills becomes purposeful. If you value authenticity, doing shadow work to understand yourself more deeply aligns with your values.

Your values can become a north star. When you're unsure about a choice, you can ask: "Does this align with what matters to me?"

The answer often becomes clear.
