The Difference Between Healing and Coping
Coping helps us survive. Healing helps us thrive. Learn the distinction and why true healing requires going deeper than symptom management.
Trauma doesn't just affect one aspect of who we are—it reverberates through every dimension of our being. And healing, true healing, must address all those dimensions too.
That's where the IntegralPTSD™ framework comes in. It's a whole-person approach to trauma recovery that recognizes that you're not just a mind, or a body, or a set of emotions. You're an integrated whole, and healing means bringing all those parts into alignment.
The Six Dimensions of Healing
1. Mind (Cognition & Beliefs)
Trauma creates beliefs: "I'm not safe," "I can't trust people," "The world is dangerous," "I deserve this." These beliefs shape how you interpret experience and respond to the world.
Mind-level healing involves: Identifying trauma-informed beliefs, challenging distortions, reconstructing worldview, rebuilding agency and self-trust, processing narrative.
2. Body (Nervous System & Somatic Awareness)
Trauma lives in the body. The nervous system becomes dysregulated, muscles hold tension, we lose connection to embodied wisdom.
Body-level healing involves: Nervous system regulation through somatic practices, completing defensive responses, rebuilding mind-body connection, learning to trust physical sensations, releasing stored tension.
3. Emotions (Regulation & Expression)
Trauma often fragments emotional lives. We feel everything or nothing, cycle between emotions, struggle to identify feelings.
Emotional healing involves: Developing capacity to feel without overwhelm, creating safe expression, grieving losses, recovering access to joy, building emotional resilience.
4. Relationships (Attachment & Connection)
Trauma shapes relational capacity. Attachment wounds, boundary violations, and relational betrayal affect our ability to trust, connect, and be vulnerable.
Relational healing involves: Examining attachment patterns, healing specific wounds, learning secure relating, building healthy boundaries, recovering authentic intimacy.
5. Meaning (Identity & Purpose)
Trauma changes us. Rebuilding identity is profound work—mourning who you were, discovering who you're becoming, integrating trauma into narrative without being defined by it.
6. Spirit (Inner Wisdom & Transcendence)
Spirit-level healing addresses existential questions, reconnecting with the sacred, developing spiritual practices, finding transcendence and purpose, integrating paradox.
How the Dimensions Integrate
These dimensions aren't separate. They're interconnected. When you work with your nervous system (Body), thoughts become clearer (Mind). When you process emotions, you have more capacity for authentic relationships.
The most powerful healing happens when all dimensions work together.
Practical Integration
A single coaching session might include: tracking physical sensation (Body), examining attached beliefs (Mind), feeling underlying emotion (Emotional), recognizing relational pattern (Relational), exploring identity/purpose (Meaning), connecting to deeper values (Spiritual).
All integrated, where each layer informs the others.
The Transformational Power
IntegralPTSD™ is powerful because it honors all of you. It doesn't ask you to "just think positive" or "just meditate." It acknowledges that trauma touched every part of you, and healing must be equally comprehensive.
When all six dimensions are engaged, transformation shifts. It's not just symptom relief. It's genuine transformation where you discover capacities and wisdom you didn't know you had.
You become more whole than before. More integrated. More authentically you.
